According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General’s Compliance Program Guidance for Clinical Laboratories, “An effective compliance program should incorporate periodic (at least annual) reviews of whether the program's compliance elements have been satisfied.” Compliance programs in the healthcare industry were largely instituted beginning in the 1990s.  Since this time, risk areas have evolved. To remain effective, compliance programs must respond to these changing risks.
